Much like hunting and tennis, skiing's dignified character provided a sporting outlet suitable for the royal image, and its relatively exclusive nature contributed to its glamorous image. Nobility, royalty, and celebrities sought to retain the same elegant, striking clothing on the slopes, especially amidst the expansion of photography as a medium. However, skiing required these upscale garments to incorporate a degree of functionality.
